Get those folks a jetway (or a mobile lounge!)

Highs in the low 80s here, which is normal. Supposed to get back up into the 90s circa Sunday.

It’s currently 32C (90F).

It’s just not right. I’m sweating my b**ls off here.

Anything above 20C (68F) is uncomfortable here.

14C (57C) , I’d be more than happy with.

My metric’s not good, but I feel like 57C is pretty toasty...

Tell me again where you are?

The jetway didn’t debut until 1959, likely at ATL. The exact location is a bit of a debate. I wrote about it in TDIAH .

Global warming or no, the weather is just whack these days.

Boston area these days. Was up around 99 over the weekend, cooled off a ton on Monday, but now is sneaking back up.

And yeah, I saw your Jetway item, I responded with more mumbling about mobile lounges. So here have a Concorde one:

(granted, with that wing they probably couldn’t load from both front and back)

Sorry, I missed that reply. I remember seeing those things in IAD back in the day. Any idea about the purpose of those pylons on top? Can’t be just for visibility, those things are huge.

Doh. I meant to put ‘F’. Lol.

Next time I’ll just stuck with Celsius.

I believe they still have them, though since the mid-field terminals got built, they mostly just use them for some international flights as it’s easier to separate incoming passengers by having them unload to a mobile lounge and then bus them directly to customs, than to have an isolated, sterile arrivals area.

I think the “fins” are just to contain the posts that the bodies raise and lower on when lowered (can’t find a picture now, but I believe they had some that just left the posts exposed). They’ve also used flat top versions, but those are either just pure buses or ones with movable gangways for reaching shorter planes.

And while I think Dulles is the only major user, there was one other high-profile use (apparently the red one wa s from BWI, though I don’t recall ever seeing them in use there) :

Room for the posts makes complete sense. Thanks. Love the NASA coach, too.

I’m trying to think now if I’ve ever ridden in one. In the dusty back corners of my brain, I think I have a memory of it. Would have been back in the 70s.

HEY, I RECOGNIZE THAT PLANE! IT’s THE KUMQUAT OR SOMETHING.

In less childish remarks, I’m not sure I can identify the trucks. The far left may be a Ford C-series, the middle looks kind of like something on an International chassis (but the hood badge may mean otherwise), and the righthand stairs truck has an odd cab almost like a Jeep FC-170 but surely not. Was this photo taken in the UK or stateside?

I don’t remember exactly, I’d have to do a GIS, but I think this was taken in Egypt or somewhere else in the Middle East.

I have a sneaking suspicion, which that makes stronger, that the stairs truck is something off-the-wall not seen on US shores very often like a Bedford or DAF. No example of either of those that I’ve seen thus far, but still - something odd.

Here we go. It was Abu Dhabi in 1974.
